Through its action and reflection the ALF aims to contribute to the development of an Intercultural Strategy for the Euro-Mediterranean Region, providing recommendations to decision-makers and institutions and advocating for shared values. The main scope of the ALF is overcoming the misunderstandings and stereotypes which affect relations between and within the societies of the Region, a task which became of utmost importance in the last decade. As a contribution to the creation of a space of prosperity, coexistence and peace, the ALF works to restore trust in dialogue and bridge the gaps in mutual perceptions, as well as promoting diversity and coexistence.

  • Alliance of Civilisations

Furthermore, the Alliance relies upon a wide network of partners and partnerships with cities, civil society organizations, corporations, foundations, universities, faith-led organizations etc.

The Alliance responds to a broad consensus across nations, cultures, religions and non religious convictions that all societies are bound together in their humanity and interdependent in their quest for stability, prosperity and peaceful coexistence.

The Alliance seeks to address rifts between societies and communities by promoting pluralism and diversity management as essential factors for good governance, based on mutual respect among people of different ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds and on helping to mobilize concerted action towards this end. This effort reflects the will of the vast majority of people to reject extremism in any society and support respect for diversity, be it ethnic, religious, cultural or other.

  • EURAD Project.

Shari’ah-based communicative approach to prevent and fight contemporary forms of radicalization leading to home-grown terrorism in the EU The overall objective of the project is to develop horizontal, Shari’ah- based methods to prevent religious radicalization within European civil societies through an innovative use of mass-media. EURAD refers to the anti-jihadist narratives of Muslim Activists/Movements of the Arab Spring as a fundamental framework to develop counter radicalization processes.

  • HERA Project ‘ European Muslims’ views on Islamist media ‘

This project is a “Humanities in the European Research Area” proposal. The rise of Islamic awakening and radicalisation in the Arab and Muslim world has had its impact on the EU-based Muslim communities, which are estimated to rise to 8% of the overall population by 2030. Moreover, recent events, such as Copenhagen shootings and Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris, indicate a rise of anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism discourses in what is regarded as “Israel-bashing” amalgamating anti-Semitism with anti-Israel sentiments. The anti-Western as well as anti-Semitic discourses tend to lean on traditional Islamic sources, drawing on past narratives in order to provide a shared interpretation of immediate struggles and to draw on comparison and analogies with previous events in history. We acknowledge the role of media in constituting spaces of cultural and social practices integrated in the cultural discourse. Because Islam as a religion is a mediated practice, it is important to analyse religious identity in relation to the unique surrounding social and cultural context of the audience. The project therefore proposes to conduct empirical research in four selected countries; each has a sizeable Muslim community.

  • European Commission- Home Affairs Directorate Project ‘PRADJIHAD / Preventing Radicalisation of Jihadist Terrorism’

In addition it aims to manage the knowledge so gained politically and legally in the context of the European Union. The results will be transferred to society in general, with the purpose of prevention and social intervention aimed especially, but not exclusively, at new generations of Muslim men and women who live in different countries of Europe. To do this, field research will be conducted to investigate the psychosocial characteristics that make people more vulnerable and resistant to violent radicalization and recruitment as well as analyze the different recruitment strategies and subjugation and from this, develop guidelines for the planning of psychosocial measures to prevent violent radicalization and recruitment.
