"Islam in Europe: Problems, Challenges and Suggestions", held from 4 to 8 April, 2016, is the third seminar among the series imparted at the Euro-Arab Foundation. The Series of Seminars takes place from January to June, 2016, at the headquarters of the Euro-Arab Foundation, as part of the Chair of Studies in Islamic Civilization.

The thrid seminar Islam in Europe: Problems, Challenges and Suggestions will be held from 4 to 8 April, 2016:

  • Schedule: From Mondays to Thursdays, from 17h00 to 21h00, Fridays from 10h00 to 14h00.
  • Teaching Staff: Tareq Oubrou, French writer, director and imam of the Grand Mosque of Bordeaux. Former Honorary President and Former President of the Association of Imams of France and Grand Mufti of the South West Regional Council of Islamic Associations (CRAISOF); Juan Jose Tamayo, Doctor in Theology from the Pontifical University of Salamanca and in Filosophy and Arts from the Autonomous University of Madrid. Director of the Chair in Theology and Religious Sciences "Ignacio Ellacuría" of the University of Carlos III of Madrid, Associate Professor at the Department of Geography, History and Art at the same University and Professor of the Chair in Three Religions of the University of Valencia.

From January to June, 2016, the Euro-Arab Foundation offers the first seminar series within the framework of the Chair of Studies in Islamic Civilization and Renewal of Religious Thought, which takes place under the auspices of the Mominoun Without Borders Foundation.

The series comprise five seminars which will take place in Granada, in the headquarters of the Euro-Arab Foundation, in the form of lectures and debates.  

The seminars, which count with the collaboration of the Institute of Granada for Higher Education and Research, aim at analysing and debating over some modern as well as current issues related to Islam, the Arab-Islamic World and Europe, issues that are dealt with in academic studies and are subject of international debates. Seminars will provide participants with the necessary tools for the analysis of subjects like modern Islamic discourses; Islamic feminism; Islam in Europe, modern Arabic and Islamic thought and Political Islam in Arab-Islamic and Occidental societies. The Chair hosts a broad range of specialists of great renown, both researchers and teaching staff, from European and Arab universities.

Seminar 1: Islamic Discourse and Modern Issues

  • From 18 to 22 January, 2016
  • Schedule: From Mondays to Thursdays, from 17h00 to 21h00 , Fridays from 10h00 to 14h00.
  • Teaching Staff: Pedro Martínez Montávez, Carmen Ruiz Bravo, Hmida Ennaifer and Mohammed Bensalah.
  • Topic: Modern Islamic elaborations in the fields of Knowledge, Politics, Economics, Arts, Islamic Jurisprudence and Law.
  • Objectives: Highlight the main problematic issues in modern Islamic thinking. Define the main obstacles against a renewal in modern Islamic discourse. Present the main modern Islamic jurisprudences in the fields of knowledge, law, economics, politics, arts and relations with non-Muslims. Highlight humanitarian meeting points between Occidental and Islamic cultures.

Seminar 2: Islamic Thought and Women's Liberation

  • From 1 to 4 March, 2016
  • Schedule: From Mondays to Thursdays, from 17h00 to 21h00, Fridays from 10h00 to 14h00.
  • Teaching Staff: Asma Lamrabet and Natalia Andújar.
  • Topic: Feminism from an Islamic point of view: Analytical and critical approach to Islamic discourse on women.
  • Objectives: Discuss social, political, cultural and historical reasons that produced an unjust situation for women in Islamic societies. Highlight women's presence in the Quran. Present modern Islamic jurisprudence related to women's issues. Provide methodological alternatives that allow addressing women's issues in Islam from an enlightened interpretation of the Sacred Text and from a view of the empowerment of Muslim women in human civilization.

  • Objectives: Highlight the main challenges of Islam in European societies. Rights of minorities: An approach to Muslim communities from the perspective of Islamic law. Present the main treatment models regarding the presence of Muslim communities in different European countries. Address the issue of citizenship and Islam in European societies.

Seminar 4: Islam and Political Islam: Similarities and Differences

  • From 9 to 13 May, 2016
  • Schedule: From Mondays to Thursdays, from 17h00 to 21h00, Fridays from 10h00 to 14h00.
  • Teaching Staff: Ridwan alSayyid, thinker, scholar and professor of Islamic Studies at the Lebanese University of Beirut. Graduated from the Faculty of Theology of Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Doctor in Islamic Studies from the University of Tübingen in Germany. From 1993 to 1997, Visiting Professor at the Universities of Harvard and Chicago; Rafael Ortega Rodrigo, Professor at the Department of Semitic Studies at the University of Granada. Graduated in Geography and History from the University of Valencia, literary and sworn translator of Arabic language, Deputy Secretary for Cultural Cooperation and International Relations at the Euro-Arab Foundation; Mohammed Bensalah, Professor at the Unviersity of Mohamed VI in Rabat, researcher in history, political thought and issues related to renewal of islamic thought.
  • Topic: Examine changes of political Islam during transitions between religious appeal and the State.
  • Objectives: Provide a cognitive view of political Islam, its appearance and development. Provide students with multi-perspective approaches to political Islam, its analysis and criticism. Present the Islamic movements' attitude towards the State, democracy, modernity, the West and human rights. Compare the attitude of political Islam with the principles of the Holy Quran and highlight the most important similarities and differences between them both.

Seminar 5: Modern Arabic and Islamic Thought

  • From 30 May to 03 June, 2016
  • Schedule: From Mondays to Thursdays, from 17h00 to 21h00, Fridays from 10h00 to 14h00.
  • Teaching Staff: Said Bensaid Alaoui, Full Professor and thinker, Former President of the University of Mohamed V in Rabat. Since 1978, Professor of Islamic Thought and Philosophy at the same University; Abdullah Al-Sayed Ould Bah, Professor of Philosophy and Islamic Studies at the University of Nouakchott in Mauritania since 1989 to the present.
  • Topic: Modern Arabic and Islamic Thought and its sources, main theoreticians, schools, tendencies, changes and horizons.
  • Objectives: Define the main important tendencies in the modern Arabic and Islamic thought during the Renaissance. Reflect upon the central concepts regarding that thought (revival, downfall, reparation, modernization, renovation, the West). Place the modern Arabic and Islamic thought between the Islamic classic thought and the Enlightenment thought.

Chair of Studies in Islamic Civilization and Renewal of Religious Thought

The Chair aims at encouraging the study of Islamic civilization as well as contributing to the establishment of peaceful cooperation, solidarity and coexistence values and conditions between different people within religious and cultural diversity by means of religious dialogue, intellectual renewal and scientific studies, research and dissemination.

The Chair works in the fields of higher education and training, scientific research, knowledge transfer and dissemination of good experiences as well as translation of Arabic to European languages and vice versa.
